Why Buy Compatibles?
These words are seductive to the environmentally conscious purchasers among us. But what are they? What do they mean? Knowing the answer may make the difference in clinching a contract with this type of buyer.
Remanufacturing is the process of restoring worn and discarded durable products to like-new condition. This discarded product, or core, is collected by either the company that originally manufactured the good or by an independent remanufacturer. Once the product has been restored to its original condition or performance, it is sold to consumers as a remanufactured good.
In contrast to recycling, which converts the collected product back into raw material to be used to manufacture an original product, remanufacturing recaptures large fractions of all the resources that go into a product’s manufacture? Traditional recycling does not capture the value added, meaning cost of labor, energy, capital and manufacturing operations, which is the largest element of the product’s cost, therefore reducing a product to its element value. Recycling also requires added labor, energy and processing capital to turn the raw material back into a new product. Remanufacturing on the other hand captures much of the value added to the original product.
Although recycling of toner cartridges has a number of benefits, remanufacturing is a superior choice, both environmentally and economically. In most cases, plastic recycling has not proven to be economically viable. Toner cartridges are particularly difficult to recycle because they are composed of several different types of plastic and must be completely dismantled and sorted. In addition, the cartridges are dirty, dusted with toner and contain non-plastic components which required disposal. Remanufacturing, on the other hand, calls for cartridges to be cleaned, and restored. The majority of the original plastic parts are reused.
The cartridge remanufacturing industry provides numerous benefits to the communities it serves.
For every cartridge that is remanufactured, approximately 2.5 pounds of plastic is withheld from the waste stream. The plastic used in a typical cartridge is industrial grade and takes approximately 1,000 years to decompose.
The manufacturing process involved in making a new cartridge requires the burning of fossil fuel, specifically oil or natural gas. On average three quarts of oil are burned to make each new cartridge.
As an industry, we conserve more oil in each seven-month period than was spilled into Alaska’s Prince William Sound by Exxon Valdez in 1989.
The EPA has determined that landfills in many states are dangerously close to capacity. Nineteen states will reach capacity in less than a decade. The remanufacturing industry saves 73.5 million pounds per year from landfills.
The general public understands and lack of recognition of the remanufacturing industry is a barrier remanufacturers must overcome. Our ability to promote the industry and explain to the public why remanufacturing is the ultimate form of recycling will be a key factor to our continued growth and expansion!
